The dining room furniture we have today would be immediately recognizable by anyone that happened to pop back from Medieval Britain! Let’s face it a table is a table, four legs or a pedestal to rest the tabletop on. That said it makes the table sound purely function over form but that is certainly not the case. Furniture for dining these days is extremely stylish and beautiful. We probably don’t use our tables ever day to eat at, but many of us do use the table for our traditional Sunday lunch gathering.
It got to the stage where the great dining hall would have been used only for celebrations and special occasions. Dining room furniture would have had to be scaled down to use in the smaller parlour room. The room for dining had been born, and it has continued to evolve and change over the centuries. The changes to dining room furniture have been gradual, but in many respects, there are still the same elements in any room used for dining. We have the table of course and the chairs.
